There are two types of identification numbers in Norway:
In the case of birth number (the regular national identification number), the first six digits represent the date of birth in the format DDMMYY.
For D number, the first digit is incremented by four to distinguish the type of identification number, like D(+4)DMMYY.
There is also exceptions to this, where there are too many people born on the same date, and the date then represents the date of issue instead.
The next three digits are a sequence number that differentiates individuals born on the same date - or having the same issuing date.
The last two digits are control digits that are calculated using an algorithm with modulus 11.
